Augill Beck makes an ideal base to discover the beauty of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Situated less than an hour away from the southern lakes with all its attractions, visit the popular Lakeland towns of Windermere, Ambleside & Grasmere and admire the delightful scenery.
Alternatively visit the northern lakes by driving to Ullswater, enjoy a boat trip and some lunch at Pooley Bridge at the northern tip of Ullswater. Keswick is further west but still only an hour away and is probably the most popular market town in the northern lakes and again you can take in the beauty along the way.
The Yorkshire Dales are also on our doorstep, a great opportunity to visit this beautiful area, why not visit the popular towns of Sedbergh and Hawes and enjoy the panoramic views in this area. Also a short drive over the Pennines is the lively market town of Middleton in Teesdale, visit the nearby High Force waterfalls. A dramatic view on any day, especially after any recent rain.
Less than a mile from Augill is the pleasant village of Brough, with a small convenience store, fish & chip shop and a public house for excellent food and ales.
For many years Brough was the principal town in the area, as it lay on an important cross-Pennine trading route through the Stainmore Pass. The town developed in two halves: Church Brough and Market Brough. A Norman castle dominates Church Brough, built upon an earlier fort that once guarded the Roman road to York.
Market Brough later became an important stopover for stagecoach journeys over the Pennines. A thriving farmers' market is held every month, the annual Brough Show showcases the best in agricultural products and Brough Hill Fair is an annual gathering for the trading of horses and other livestock.
Kirkby Stephen, an ancient market town at the head of the Eden Valley is only 4 miles away and possesses an air of historical intrigue. A fine church and busy market square lie at its heart. Narrow, twisting passageways await exploration, and underground passages once provided refuge during Scottish raids (and to smuggle in beer to the ale-houses to avoid paying taxes!).
The nearby town and royal borough of Appleby, in the heart of the Eden Valley, is the focal point for many outlying villages and hamlets. Its traditional shops and indoor market provide for every requirement, whilst the riverside is perfect for a casual stroll or picnic. For the more energetic there is an indoor swimming pool, gym and fully equipped sports centre. For rail users, both Appleby & Kirkby Stephen are on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway and within 30 minutes you can reach Carlisle and enjoy this cosmopolitan city.
Just over into Durham, lies Barnard Castle. This is a historic thriving market town, which developed in the protective shadow of Bernard Balliol's castle. Built on a fine defensive site in 1125, the castle is in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public.
Other local towns worth visiting include Kendal & Richmond. Augill Beck really is in an ideal location to explore the many attractions of the area.
